INTER FIGURA by Marie Zechiel

Berlin-based dancer and Movement Director Marie Zechiel presents Inter Figura, a short film that challenges conventional notions of gender identity. The film portrays a woman switching between gender-defined appearances, questioning how gender influences behavior and success in a patriarchal world. Marie Zechiels work on Inter Figura delves deep into the complexities of body language and gender. She explores how our movements, though unique, often fall into patterns that are interpreted by others as expressions of emotions like happiness, sadness, or anger. These patterns, deeply ingrained in our perception of gender, can shape how we are viewed by society, sometimes beyond our control. However, they also offer opportunities to consciously play with and transform our gender identity, influencing how others perceive us. In Inter Figura, Marie Zechiel reveals this phenomenon in a playful yet thought-provoking way. The film contrasts basic ideas of sexual identities and explores transformations between them, touching on various aspects of social gender roles. Through these transformations, the film leaves viewers questioning whether our movement-based awareness of gender is a necessary illusion that shapes the foundation of society. This film marks Marie Zechiels directorial debut and has garnered critical acclaim. Inter Figura has won awards and is being showcased at fashion film festivals globally, including the prestigious Aesthetica Film Festival. Marie’s innovative approach and unique perspective earned her a nomination as Best Emerging Talent by the BOKEH South African Fashion Film Festival, further solidifying her status as a rising star in the world of movement direction and film. Inter Figura is not just a film; it’s a powerful statement on the fluidity of gender and the role of movement in shaping our identities.
